2018 MARTY-award winning composer, Mason Victoria has written in a plethora of mediums, including but not limited to chamber music, pop bands, video game scoring and film scoring...
Aside from composition, Mason is a notable copyist, transcriber and orchestrator. He has been noted for his speed and expertise in formatting and detail. Some examples include...
Hiromi Uehara's 'Places to Be' for solo piano. Mason was commissioned to transcribe this piece for a performance in Calgary by Prix Goyer winner Philip Chiu. Mason was asked to transcribe the entire performance- from the chord voicings in the beginning rubato section, to the blazing 16th note lines in the solo. (Hear example at 3:25)
Masini McDermott's One Night Only. Mason was commissoned to rearrange a significant amount of pieces for Masini McDermott's show. Mason was consistently reached out for arranging advice and charting throughout the process and creation of the show. This year marks the second year Mason has worked with Masini and her production team.
The UNIVOX Choir. Mason was tasked with the challenge to write a piece of choral music using a Random Number Generating (RNG) vocalising robot. Mason decided it was best to use the RNG Robot (Alex) as a soloist and use the choir as a supporting pad below it. Alex was locked to a nine-note scale in which the choir would support with moving and developing lines that also stayed in the chordal realm of the piece. This has been one of the most interesting and aleotoric pieces Mason has had performed in public.
Created by the creative minds behind ART // THE BAND, ART // THE BIG BAND was a project that included translating and rearranging their unique, small ensemble music to a larger format. The band served to be a 19-piece big band that blasted the bombastic sounds and intricate shots the band is known for. Mason arranged 4 pieces for the concert along side other friends of ART. The show proved to be a huge hit, drawing in an extremely large crowd from all around the GTA. It is confirmed that there will be another show for this ensemble.
Mason has been asked to transcribe a variety of unique and difficult solos and cadenzas. One example is the trumpet cadenza in Trumpet Concerto Op. 18 performed by Giuliano Soemmerhalder. Mason was tasked to listen to the free cadenza and transcribe it for reading. Since the candenza does not have a set tempo or time signature, the transcription was interpreted in the most feasible way.
