Arbitrary Ascension was named after the chord pattern that the piece was developed on. The piece transposes up a minor third every eight bars after the initial theme, allowing the piece to constantly feel like it is eternally transposing up, though it just revolves around a cycle every four transpositions. Written in 15/8, the piece relies on the band to have intimate knowledge of afro-cuban grooves and confidence in moving around a very intriguing chord progression. Drummer knowledge of cascara is extremely crucial for this piece. Features guitar, trumpet, tenor sax and voice.
original score instrumentation is as follows:
5 saxes (AATTB)
guitar, piano, bass, drums
